How to Write for Newlok

Newlok is a platform for thoughtful writing on History, Philosophy, Art, Culture, and Politics. Here's what makes a great submission.

What we publish

We publish original essays, analyses, and arguments across our four categories. A good piece takes a clear position, supports it with evidence, and offers the reader something they couldn't find from a quick search.

Writing guidelines

  • Have a thesis. State your central argument early and return to it throughout.
  • Show your reasoning. Don't just assert — explain how you arrived at your conclusion.
  • Be specific. Concrete examples and details are more persuasive than abstractions.
  • Cite your sources. Link to primary sources, books, or reputable references where relevant.
  • Write for a curious non-expert. Assume the reader is intelligent but not a specialist in your topic.

Length and format

Most strong pieces run between 600 and 2,000 words. There's no hard limit, but every paragraph should earn its place. Use headings to break up longer pieces. Write short sentences. Avoid jargon unless you define it.

What gets upvoted

The community rewards pieces that teach something new, challenge a common assumption, or illuminate a familiar topic from an unexpected angle. Recaps, listicles, and opinion pieces without argument tend to underperform.
